A commitment to lifelong learning is highlighted in many areas of society today. It is important to the church because learning is at the heart of discipleship, and growth in discipleship is at the heart of ministry.
In the Scottish Episcopal Church the scheme of supporting lifelong and ministry-related learning is known as Continuing Ministerial Development (CMD). There are two distinct parts to this scheme: CMD 1-3 provides a system of regular and structured support for those in their first three years of authorised ministry, and CMD 4+ builds on a more self-directed approach for all other ministers.
Individual Development Plans (IDP) are used in CMD, as they are in initial ministerial education, to help define and monitor the minister's learning over the course of a year. The structure of these plans differ according to the stage of ministry.
The provision of CMD is the responsibility of the dioceses. The contact details for those with a responsibility for CMD in the diocese and their diocesan web pages are given below. The provincial Ministry Development Officers provide support to the dioceses for the delivery of CMD and monitor CMD provision.
Further information about CMD in each diocese can be found on the diocesan pages on this site.
